Well it’s been on and off but it now appears ‘The Libertines’ are definitely to reform…29 year old Doherty has made another claim about the re-union at the NME Awards this week and his interview seems unequivocal. The Libertines will be back to grace our iPods, radio stations and stages next year.
Other sources close to Barat also confirm that this time it seems likely to happen…it was Carl Barat that called an end to their musical relationship as The Libertines due to Pete’s love affair with the dark side of life. And it was Barat that recently called a halt to the Dirty Pretty Things.
Although Doherty is obviously worshipped in some areas arguably his records still haven’t really delivered the sales that were expected. It’s easy to forget but when Doherty first hit the scene, he was credited by some as the new Jim Morrison or something!! Maybe on the drugs front.BBC culture show appearances raving about Pete’s “poetry” seem pretty ridiculous now.
That said, you can’t deny Doherty is the ‘real deal’ when it comes to being a rock star…he does that better than most and we hope the news about The Libertines sees a return to his best days.
Doherty and Barat deliver a genuine chemistry on stage and are a great live act…we’ll keep an eye on this one as hopefully gigs will be announced sooner rather than later.
Time will tell.
Meanwhile Pete also has a solo album and a Babyshambles record in the pipeline so it seems 2009 will be a busy year for Mr.Doherty.
