U2 have hit another high with their new album going to number one in the album charts yesterday, their first album release for a few years now. The band have just performed a week long residency on the Letterman show to promote the album and last week a roof top gig saw 5000 muster to check out the new tunes in central London.
The new album entitled - No Line on the Horizon - sees U2 join very prestigious company in becoming one of the highest album chart acts of all time.
Bono and the boys sit in joint third in the all time rankings alongside Madonna and The Rolling Stones, this is the band’s tenth studio album and leaves just a few more albums to record to get to the top of the all time greats list. Sitting pretty currently are The Beatles (2nd) and Elvis Presley (1st) with 15 albums.
In changing times this is some achievement for a band that have been ridiculed by the “younger Music Industry” as ‘MOR’ and one trick ponies…smacks of jealousy and a heavy dose of serious ‘over the top’ confidence you see in so many bands when they first get success…the reality is that there won’t be many bands that wouldn’t trade places with U2 !
A follow up second album this year is rumoured so it looks like the Elvis Presley album target is motivation enough to keep on rocking for another few years at least…who knows - maybe the Rolling Stones will get back in the studio just to make things difficult!
