According to numerous news sources today, including the mighty BBC, You Tube have decided that their ongoing ‘battle’ with the PRS is going nowhere fast and they have apparently decided to pull all music videos from the platform… in the UK at least!
At the time of writing (22.00pm GMT) all looks as prior the announcement with our random checks delivering the usual music videos but according to reports that won’t be the case soon enough.
GYEO love You Tube, its a fantastic place to check out new music, old music practically any music but even though the relationships with record labels appear to be getting better with revenue-share deals around advertising seemingly struck - now the PRS want their cut. The PRS (Performing Rights Society) represent the artists themselves. These guys feel that their interests are not being met and they have been pushing You Tube about this for some time now. They have a valid argument to be fair, although we are not party to the specific commercials of course.
Google (Owners of You Tube) claim that the numbers that the PRS are requesting just don’t stack up so for now we have what is commonly known as a stalemate. No more music video for the music loving masses of You Tube, well for the time being anyway.
Get Your Ears Out has a stronger interest than most in this particular story as our website enables users to paste in links for music videos allowing fans to add content to band pages for over 16,000 bands now. Oh well - a minuscule player in a big industry!
We don’t expect this to go on for too long but we don’t believe that content YOU shoot at gigs and then upload to You Tube can be taken down so if you start to get serious withdrawals from music video via GYEO or YOU Tube - well YOU know just what to do.
Well keep close to this one for sure.
