Hey Y’all,
GYEO talked recently about the rise of social media applications with even self-confessed technophobe Noel Gallagher using his blog to stir up a virtual “scrap” with his brother Liam (AKA R Kid) whilst on their South American tour.
Well we’ve watched the Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helder do his thing for some time too.
Matt Helder from Arctic Monkeys tells you whats going on…
With a witty portrayal of life in a big band delivered straight to the fans on the mighty You Tube (a site the PRS see as the scourge of songwriters….that’s another story - see here if you’re interested) we are sure the future for traditional music PR people is getting more and more uncertain.
We positively encourage the new music industry. Thats bands maintaining their publishing for as long as they can, using digital distribution companies like AWAL and Tunecore, embracing social media and other digital marketing channels…you know all that stuff.
In time we’re sure companies will spring up that can facilitate better revenue share for bands on the ticketing side of things too. Other than old school radio and the live business (we mean agents & promoters of course) bands can, if they have some business brains, make a living by keeping control for themselves until they are in a position to negotiate more effectively with a proper label if indeed they ever feel thats going to be more advantageous…some already say maybe not!
So what’s our point? Well a glance at the NME prompted this little article as we find one the biggest brands in UK music for sure finding out and then writing about some Arctic Monkey’s “news”…when almost 100,000 people have streamed the footage directly. Despite the likes of myspace, twitter and spotify etc not exactly being news anymore they do seem to be here to stay. And that means the middlemen of the old music industry have to get smarter to maintain their place in the value chain of music.
Very interesting times ahead.
At Get Your Ears Out we’re planning to get cracking on some serious development now and although we ain’t some big corporate heavily funded business we are sure that bands and fans of bands will find our site becoming much more interesting as 2009 moves along…we’ll be part of this new music industry. So despite our beta existence keep checking out and register so that when we are ready you’ll be one of the first to know.
Self-centred promo - you can’t beat it - so join in!
