Music Hack Day

We’ve been in The Guardian’s office in London for over 24 hours now participating in an event that brings together some of the finest developers and music technology brains in the country… and beyond for that matter.

You can check out more about the event which concludes later today just here!

There’s some very cool things going down as you might expect - to give you a flavour of the people attending, just take a look at the main companies involved:

BBC Music

7 Digital

EchoNest

Last.FM

Songkick

Gigulate

Soundcloud

Some very cool stuff if you you ain’t already seen these guys - our current favourites and sites of interest being Soundcloud and EchoNest. There are plenty of other new kids on the block and various independent developers hacking away too…keep an eye out for Mixcloud too - very cool.

So what are we doing here? - Well in simple terms the objective of the weekend is for the main sponsors above to throw out  their API’s to developers to see what they can create…we are really looking forward to later today to see what the weekend has delivered.

We’ve decided to work with 7 digital’s API and we’ve made a simple but neat little application for the hosts of the event meaning that Guardian users whilst reading an article about band X can scroll over the band name and reach additional content in a clean pop up window to then listen to audio samples from 7 digital should they choose and then go buy…it just brings together copy based & audio based content closer together.

A potentially useful affiliate revenue fir any music publishing website and one that we’ll introduce when we get our shit together very soon… a version 2 Get Your Ears Out site is imminent!

We’ll loose the bugs in our current beta site and have tidied up the front end - the main change is that we have sorted the gig feeds - delivering efficient clean results for gig lovers.

We’ll no doubt update on Music Hack Day later tonight.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
