Gig Review: Chew Lips, Hoxton Hall, 22nd Jan.

Chew Lips, Hoxton Hall, Jan 22nd.

Hype is rife this evening at London’s Hoxton Hall, as a bustle of industry folk, press and a lucky few ticket holders gather to celebrate the launch of Chew Lips debut album ‘Unicorn’.

Having been featured in many a “ones to watch” lists for 2010 the South London trio (singer Tigs, and multi-instrumentalists Will Sanderson and James Watkins) need to be able to deliver. And they do, oh so well.

A packed gloomy hall greets guests this evening, as Tigs and her band stand silhouetted on stage. Electronic beats commence. Donning a golden dress Tigs body pops eloquently, stereo synths accompany, she sings and it’s absolutely beautiful.

The cool London crowd give up little inhibition as Chew Lips offer out myspace favourite ‘Slick’. This is a tune! Electro beats, spiralling synths and melodies so perfect your eyes and ears become fixed.

Album winner ‘Karen’ follows. Imagine Blondie, mixed with a cheeky bit of Depeche Mode. This evening’s set is completed by past single ‘Solo’. An all together impressive night’s work from our saviours of 2010 - Chew Lips.

Their debut album ‘Unicorn’ is out now. Buy it.
