Gig Review: Surfer Blood, Ruby Lounge, May 7th.

With one of our favourite debut albums of the year so far, Surfer Blood have supported The Drums and are now up to their own headline tour. And so tonight, they took to Ruby Lounge’s stage a 9:20pm.

Opening with Fast Jabroni, the first thing that we notice is that the band kick in at a slightly slower pace then on record, or so it seems. It’s also not the outfit you’d expect with the sound of Astro Coast. It’s very rarely that you imagine what a band look like, but for some reason the appearance of the college age looking five piece didn’t fit the sound. Makes you listen more to the music itself though I suppose.

Starting off with some sound issues, the band rolls into crowd favourite ‘Take it easy Vibes. It’s from this point onwards that the band become more confident and warmed up to the crowd. Everything becomes a bit more spontaneous and the afro beat-esque sound carpet unwinds and gets people ‘boogying’. Unlike with some new bands, due to the fact that Astro Coast is an extremely strong effort as a debut album, there’s not really a non-exciting moment in their set. Floating Vibes shows a strong five piece and slower tracks of the likes of Harmonix and Slow Jabroni don’t take the pace out of the set.

Though it shows that the band are still quite new and maybe even nervous to do a headline tour like this one, there are moments of greatness in the musical intermissions when the band show us the chemistry that they possess. It gives us hope for the second album and with already showcasing new tracks just 4 months after their first release, it looks like the best is yet to come for the young lads from Florida.
